Olsen Twins, Taking the Fashion Industry by Storm
Forbes magazine recently compiled a list of the top 30 designers under 30 years of age to watch in 2012. The list showcases designers from a variety of countries and backgrounds. Two of the fashion designers on the list are already household names.
Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen have been celebrities since they were infants. Born in Sherman Oaks, California, in June 1986, the twins were cast on Full House when they were a year old, sharing the role of Michelle Tanner. They were on the series for eight years, then starred in a series of movies and another TV series called Two of a Kind, becoming teen icons. Through their production company, the girls filmed a number of straight-to-video movies, several musical detective videos, The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, and the hugely popular You’re Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley’s Party tapes.
The fraternal twins branded a wide variety of products, from games and dolls to lunch boxes and backpacks. As tweens, they embarked on their fashion careers, launching a clothing line of designer short dresses targeting girls aged 4-14, sold exclusively at Wal-Mart.
In 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley enrolled at New York University. That same year they became full owners of Dualstar after buying the minority shares of the company. A year later the sisters were featured in a Badgley Mischka advertising campaign. In 2007, the sisters launched the Elizabeth and James contemporary, high-end collection that features vintage-inspired designs and accessories. That year, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were ranked the eleventh-richest women in entertainment by Forbes, with an estimated net worth of nearly $100 million.
In October of 2008, the Olsens authored Influence, which featured the artists and designers that influenced them, including Christian Louboutin, Lauren Hutton and Bob Colacello. Next, in 2010 they introduced The Row, a high-end, high-priced, clothing line. The most recent line is a budget collection called Olsenboye, sold exclusively at JCPenney stores.
While they may have made their first fortune as actors, the sisters appear to have moved into fashion full-time and are now accepted by the fashion community as legitimate designers.
